Reported UFO Invasion Panics Jordanian Town

Posted by 3citynewswire on 04/06/2010

Residents of a Jordanian desert town panicked after learning of a newspaper’s article describing the nighttime landing of 10-foot tall aliens in flying saucers, the country’s officials reported.

The article on the front page of the Al Ghad newspaper described a UFO landing that took place near the town of Jafr, located about 300 kilometres from Amman, the Jordanian capital. The report stated that the spaceships had illuminated the whole area, interfered with communications and caused residents to flee down the streets. The article nearly led to the town’s emergency evacuation. After reading the report, Jafr’s mayor Mohammed Mleihan was so concerned that he asked security authorities to look for the aliens.  “Students didn’t go to school, their parents were frightened and I almost evacuated the town’s 13,000 residents,” Mleihan told the Associated Press. “People were scared that aliens would attack them.”The problem? The article was an April Fool’s Day joke.

A Jordanian security official, speaking anonymously due to the confidential nature of security protocol, told AP that an emergency plan was nearly put in place in Jafr.

Mleihan said that the newspaper had spoken to him to apologize for the nuisance the joke caused. But, he added that he was still considering suing the newspaper for its “big lie.”

The managing editor of the newspaper, Moussa Barhoumeh, has attempted to smooth things over by noting that the joke had been “blown out of proportion.”

He told AP that the Al Ghad newspaper “meant to entertain, not scare people.”
